How much will the Duke lacrosse players make in their lawsuit

The three formerly accused Duke lacrosse players, Reade Seligmann, Collin Finnerty and Dave Evans, have brought a federal lawsuit against the city of Durham. They alledge a multitude of items and they are seeking punitive and compensatory damages.

How much will they get if they win? Unsure, but based on reports prior to the lawsuit being filed, the group was looking for $30 million dollars and changes in police procedures:

Lawyers for the three former Duke lacrosse players once accused of rape have given the city until early next month to either pony up $30 million or face a federal civil lawsuit, according to sources with knowledge of the negotiations who requested anonymity.

The lawsuit is filed under civil rights and touches on three important parts of the case:

  • Changes in the way photo lineups are done.
  • An independent position of review for all police investigations.
  • Annual reviews of the police department.

So, back to the question. How much will the Duke players receive if they win the case? No one knows, but if they do get the $30 million they were seeking it would be the largest award ever against a police department.
